Germany calling on EU to increase use of low-emission steel in automotive industry

5 Dec 2025 15:23 reported by Ana Lee

The governors of Germany's 11 federal states have written to the European Commission, urging the EU to significantly increase the use of low-emission steel in the automotive sector and calling for a more consistent regulatory framework between the steel and automotive industries.

The German Steel Federation (WV Stahl) welcomed this move, stating that low-emission steel production in Germany and across the EU is crucial for maintaining Europe's industrial base and contributing to climate neutrality.

The steel industry is ready to contribute to this transformation, but the EU should build a regulatory framework to support large-scale investment and a deep strategic integration of the steel and automotive industries.
