Tata Steel & Andritz partner on acid recovery plant to cut carbon emissions

Tata Steel and Andritz have inked a multi-million agreement for a new acid recovery plant at Tata Steel's Port Talbot site, supporting the company's £1.25 billion transition to low-carbon steelmaking.

The facility will operate as a closed-loop system, recovering and recycling hydrochloric acid used in cleaning hot-rolled steel coils before cold rolling for applications ranging from automotive parts to appliances. This will dramatically reduce acid transportation, cutting weekly deliveries from approximately 25 tankers to just two or three per month while eliminating the need for overseas imports and hazardous waste exports.

The plant meets stringent environmental standards and will enhance both process stability and cost efficiency while significantly reducing the carbon footprint of pickling operations.

Construction is scheduled to begin in January 2027, with commissioning planned for later that year.
