Novelis invests EUR 43 million in rail logistics to achieve CO₂e reduction

Novelis Inc., a Georgia-based industrial aluminum company, is investing approximately EUR 43 million to expand its European rail logistics, purchasing 220 new, flexible Shimmns railcars.

This strategic investment is in line with the company's "rail instead of road" sustainability commitment. Since rail already handles 95% of material deliveries between Novelis’ ten European plants, the new fleet will further optimize transport.

The added capacity will allow Novelis to shift more aluminum ingot transports from its Nachterstedt recycling plant to the Alunorf joint venture plant from trucks to trains. This change is expected to eliminate roughly 2,000 truck trips per year, saving an estimated 78% of CO₂e emissions associated with those routes.

The first 30 railcars have already been delivered to Novelis, and the remainder is scheduled for delivery by September 2026.
