EU plans to revise Research Fund for Coal and Steel to accelerate and streamline investments

The European Commission has announced a proposal to revise the legal framework of the Research Fund for Coal and Steel (RFCS). This reform aims to enhance support for decarbonization and clean transformation in Europe's coal and steel industries, while strengthening their long-term competitiveness.

The proposed changes align with the Steel and Metals Action Plan released in March 2025, which calls for simplifying and accelerating research and innovation investments within the steel sector.

RFCS will continue to play a central role in mitigating the risks of clean steel projects and maintaining Europe's technological leadership in the industry.

Major changes include a significant increase in annual allocations from €111 million to €200 million and adjustments to co-funding rates, boosting EU contributions for industrial participants and researchers.

If approved, the revised framework will take effect in January 2027.
