Japan to tighten rules on large-scale solar projects to protect natural environment and landscapes

Japanese officials said the government is considering ending incentives such as the feed-in tariff (FIT) and feed-in premium (FIP) for ground-mounted, large-scale solar power projects beginning from April 2027.

As for the existing facilities and residential solar systems, the support will be continued; in the meantime, the development of next-generation perovskite solar cells will also be strengthened.

According to government officials, the move to tighten regulations and end financial support for large-scale solar power projects is to protect the natural environment and preserve landscapes. This reflects Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi’s view that many large solar installations, often using panels made overseas, could damage both scenery and the natural environment.

Besides, the government also plans to consider expanding the scope of national environmental assessments to cover smaller solar projects.
