SSAB, a Sweden-based steel company, and Germany’s defense and technology company Rheinmetall have inked a letter of intent to supply decarbonized steel for defense production. This partnership makes Rheinmetall the first in its industry to utilize such materials.

Initial shipments will feature SSAB Zero™, a product made using recycled steel and fossil-free energy. Over time, the supply will expand to include SSAB Fossil-free™ steel, which uses HYBRIT® technology to replace traditional coal.

Per Elfgren, Head of SSAB Special Steels, said that the agreement addresses rising demands for carbon reduction across the manufacturing chain. This collaboration is expected to establish a sustainable foundation for future defense equipment and civilian technologies.
