Meranti Green Steel secures full HBI offtake for Oman project

Singapore-headquartered Meranti Green Steel has reached a major commercial goal by securing buyers for the entire 2.5 million tons of green hot briquetted iron (HBI) from its first module in Oman.

Thyssenkrupp Materials Trading will take 1.0 million tons, and INTERFER Edelstahl and INTERFER Austria signed for 0.25 million tons. Glencore and Meranti’s Thai steel plant will receive the remaining supply.

The distribution structure assigns specific regions to each partner. Thyssenkrupp Materials Trading supplies Germany, Belgium, and the Netherlands. INTERFER Edelstahl and INTERFER Austria focus on Italy and Austria. Glencore handles distribution for other countries.

These agreements support the project’s financial stability as it nears a final investment decision in mid-2026. By using natural gas and green hydrogen, the Duqm-based plant provides low-CO2 iron units for electric arc furnace steelmaking to aid industry-wide decarbonization.
