Taiwan’s NCKU & CSC partner on hydrogen-based steelmaking technology

Taiwan’s National Cheng Kung University (NCKU) has formed a cross-disciplinary research team to help China Steel Corporation (CSC) adopt "hydrogen for carbon" smelting. This green process replaces traditional carbon reductants with hydrogen-rich agents, turning carbon dioxide emissions into water vapor.

Supported by 11 universities and over NT$200 million in funding, the initiative targets a reduction of 1.55 million tons of CO2 annually. This volume represents approximately one-fifth of the annual carbon absorption from Taiwan's forests.

By optimizing blast furnace reactions, the project assists downstream small and medium enterprises in meeting international carbon tariffs such as CBAM. The collaboration also focuses on talent cultivation, ensuring students gain direct industrial experience to support Taiwan's 2050 net-zero goals.
