SSAB & JTK Power launch low-emission marine silencer

5 Feb 2026 13:53 reported by Joy Liu

A A A
SSAB and JTK Power produced the world’s first marine engine silencer using SSAB Zero™ steel. This material, made from recycled steel and fossil-free energy, reduces carbon emissions by 77% compared to traditional blast furnace-produced hot-rolled steel. By using four tonnes of this steel, JTK Power cut the total emissions of the silencer by nearly 50%.

The component underwent usual cutting, bending, and welding, showing that SSAB Zero™ steel performs like conventional steel. In addition to noise reduction, this decarbonized solution offers financial benefits, such as lower port charges for greener vessels.

SSAB Zero™ steel production will expand further once SSAB completes its electric arc furnace in Oxelösund by 2026. This collaboration supports JTK Power’s goal to reduce indirect scope 3 emissions in the value chain by roughly 20%.
