BMW iX3 to use thyssenkrupp’s CO2-reduced steel starting in 2026

Starting in 2026, the BMW Group will integrate bluemint® recycled steel from thyssenkrupp Steel into the production of the BMW iX3. This material will form the vehicle’s outer panels, interior parts, and battery housing.

Unlike traditional primary steel, this material uses processed scrap to replace iron ore in blast furnaces, cutting CO2 emissions while maintaining high surface quality and formability. The steel provides vital fire protection and electromagnetic shielding for battery systems. Since the material properties match conventional steel, BMW can implement it without changing existing factory processes.

This supply agreement aligns with thyssenkrupp's transformation toward carbon neutrality, which includes a planned hydrogen-capable direct reduction plant to replace coal-based steel production. By 2045 at the latest, the company plans for all production to change over to climate-neutral bluemint® steel.
