Business Finland, a Finnish government agency for innovation funding and promoting trade, tourism, and investment, awarded SSAB EUR 20 million for the five-year Sustainable World through Steels research and development (R&D) program.

This initiative targets the transition to fossil-free electric steelmaking and the development of low-carbon steel grades. With an estimated total cost of EUR 50 million, the project aims to modernize the Nordic production model.

SSAB leads an ecosystem of more than 200 partners, including universities, technology developers, and customers. Main focus areas involve digital supply chain optimization, low-emission industrial applications, and circular resource utilization.

The program prepares the company to increase Finnish exports and generate new business. This grant serves as a key enabler for creating a fossil-free value chain and delivering advanced high-strength steel grades to meet the growing global demand for decarbonized products.
