Tata Steel Nederland has partnered with the CiSMA (Circular Steel for Mass Market Applications) initiative to develop high-grade steel using only recycled scrap and electric arc furnaces.

This EU-funded project targets a 70% reduction in carbon emissions for sheet steel production. By utilizing machine learning and digital models, researchers aim to clean contaminated scrap and recover valuable materials such as copper, ensuring the final product meets the strict quality standards of traditional steel.

The consortium includes thirteen partners across five countries, with major brands like Volvo Cars and Electrolux Professional testing the recycled steel in vehicles and appliances. These companies seek to understand how higher recycled content affects manufacturing processes and helps lower supply chain emissions.

Supported by a nearly EUR 4.5 million budget from the funding programme, Horizon Europe, the collaboration aims to prove that circular steel can support mass-market industrial applications.
