European Commission updates ETS benchmarks to support industrial decarbonization

14 May 2026 15:49 reported by Munsey

A A A
The European Commission has proposed updated benchmark values under the EU Emissions Trading System (EU ETS) for the 2026-2030 period, aiming to support industrial competitiveness and decarbonization.

The proposal is expected to be formally adopted by the end of June, after a four-week public consultation and review by member states within the Climate Change Committee.

Under the revised methodology, indirect electricity-related emissions will remain included in 14 product benchmarks, a measure intended to support industrial electrification and raise benchmark values.

The Commission said that the revised benchmarks would enable companies to keep receiving free allocations that cover about 75% of their emissions on average.
