Tata Steel IJmuiden & Ecocem partner to develop slag use in construction

14 May 2026 14:35 reported by Joy Liu

A A A
Tata Steel IJmuiden and Ecocem have entered a cooperation agreement to develop new applications for steelmaking slag in cement and concrete production, targeting lower CO2 emissions and greater circularity in construction.

The plan focuses on expanding the use of BOF and EAF slags, which remain underutilized compared with widely adopted blast furnace slag. These materials could replace primary raw inputs in cement, mortars, and concrete.

The partnership aims to convert steelmaking by-products into usable resources, reducing reliance on primary raw materials and lowering the carbon footprint of building products. The initiative also supports Tata Steel’s Groen Staal program for decarbonization.

Ecocem sees the agreement as a way to scale alternatives to conventional cement and support more sustainable construction practices across Europe.
